Opinions: Reader explains Jury Nullification

Posted by Ginny Eggleston on Friday 11 April 2008

By Rob Oates, Caldwell City Councilman

Have you ever served on a jury? Did you know that the jury is one of the most powerful components in our legal jury.duty.jpgsystem? Unfortunately, a lot of people go to great lengths to make sure they don't get called for jury duty or, if called, that they can be quickly disqualified so they can get on with their lives. If you needed to request a jury trial, how would you feel as the defendant being judged by a jury of the twelve people not smart enough to get out of jury duty?

Jury duty is one of the obligations we each share living in our free society. Representative government works because it's a government of the people and people are involved. Juries play a crucial role in our republic. They provide one of the checks that balance the application of government power. The jury is the last line of peaceful defense against a government run amok.

Government: Legislative Update

Posted by Ginny Eggleston on Sunday 02 March 2008

By State House Rep. John Vander Woude, Dist. 21
vander_woude.jpgThis week at the Idaho legislature we are still working through the issue of annexation. Previously, HB0524 was introduced into the House State Affairs Committee. Within the last week it has been revised and was presented as a routing slip to the House State Affiars Committee. The revised bill still states that there must be an instrument of consent to annexation. Currently the bill is sitting in the House Local Government Committee.

I am also a member of the House Environment, Energy & Technology Committee. On Wednesday, H0482 was presented to the committee dealing with air quality emissions, and is currently being held in committee. The purpose of this bill provides authority to the Department of Environmental Quality to establish a vehicle emission testing and maintenance program. Currently, District 21 already has emissions testing with a maximum cost of $15 per test which is administered by the Air Quality Board.

Education: Kuna School District to hold alternative school public forum tonight

Posted by Ginny Eggleston on Tuesday 05 February 2008

Tonight at 7 p.m. the Kuna School District will be holding a public forum at the Kuna Middle School library to discuss plans to build an alternative high school to serve the Kuna community. Childcare will be available at the middle school for parents who want to attend the forum.

The district is looking at building the alternative school on the northwest corner of the current Kuna Middle School property, according to Jay W. Hummel, Kuna's Superintendent of Schools

The school will provide a more flexible course of study for high school students within the Kuna district. In the valley, alternative high schools have offered smaller class sizes, giving teachers the opportunity to spend more time one-on-one helping students who are often over-looked in the more traditional high school due to large class sizes.

With the addition of an alternative high school, Kuna will be joining the ranks of other local communities such as Meridian (Meridian Academy), Nampa (Alpha I), and Boise (Fort Boise, Mountain Cove, and Booth Memorial).

Read the Kuna Melba News next week for a follow-up story on this event.
